Why is it important for my child to be present every day?
Our instruction is based on a progress of learning. If your child misses any ONE day in that process, they have missed 25% of the opportunities for instruction and practice.
SCHEDULE OF INSTRUCTION
Day 1: Introduction of new skills
This is our preview day. Students are introduced to the learning objectives for the week. They are introduced to the new vocabulary and high-frequency words for the week as well as discuss meanings and uses. Phonics skills are introduced and students practice breaking words into their individual phonemes (sounds).
Day 2: Initial Guided Practice
Most of the work done on this day is done using the TIMS model:
I Do - We Do - You Do
Core Instruction is modeled for students, then the class participates in guided practice, and finally, the students demonstrate their understanding.
Day 3: Small Group and Partner Practice
Games and Activities to strengthen skills and provide feedback to me about the strengths and weaknesses in individual students.
Day 4: Independent Practice and Reteaching
This is the day, students get to show what they've learned through a variety of practice exercises. Any continued weaknesses are addressed and students are given the opportunity to ask questions, seek help, and strengthen skills.
Day 5: Assessment Day
Students demonstrate the level of mastery.
READING
We are using the Journeys series by © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company as our core reading material. In addition to the resources provided with Journeys,
I select additional teaching materials to make
students' learning as engaging as possible as
they learn new skills and practice previous skills.
